Qute theme (Firefox)

Update: Just received a fixed version of it (cheers to John Conde). Awesome! Now it’s Firefox 1.0 with Qute 2.1.3 for me :-)

You can say that if you find something good you usually stick with it and that’s just what I would have love to do after I updated all my clients to Firefox 1.0, but the bad thing is: I can’t!

I have been using the Qute theme ever since I started to use firefox (firebird) and now I’m waiting and waiting, as I thought the theme would be ported to 1.0 right away – but obviously I was wrong: Arvid Axelsson says it won’t be ready until the end of november. Ok, ok that isn’t a long time anymore as it’s already November 15th today, but you know how it is when you’re wanting something – it’d better be here now ;-)

Third pc up and running…

…not as I expected though. As mentioned here I wanted to do a nice new and clean install of Gentoo linux. So I got myself the livecd (2004.2) and started to install away. I gotta say the installation “manual” is really good and if you take the time to follow it through it will make it easy for you, even if you don’t have much (or any) experience with linux installation [nontheless it might not be the ideal distribution for complete newbies, but that’s another story].

So I got the system installed and all (basic system without X etc), but when I tried to install X and a desktop manager (KDE) the system kept freezing during the build process. I tried it over and over with all sorts of settings. It would build and build and build (as it’s an Athlon 1100MHz it’s quite clear that extreme compilation like this will take some time) and just freeze somewhere in the middle or near the end of completion. So now I was reall fed up and thought: There are two possibilities now, either try and try and try again or give up altogether. I chose to go with the later as I had already spend some good two days in total and had nothing on my hands [I was slowly starting to think that the pc might have a hardware problem, but memory tests and all came up with nothing].

So I downloaded Suse 9.1 personal yesterday (go ahead and call me cheap ;-) ) and ran the installation – one things for sure: the setup process is at least as good as the windows setup, it let’s you configure everything using their “YAST” install-tool. And after a little under one hour the system was up and running. Now I’m just downloading system updates and new nvidia drivers and I’m set – finally.

Time to spend…

…some more cash. After acquiring my brand new samsung hdd I just came across an offer I couldn’t turn down:

Amazon.de is offering the lovely LG 1716S 17″ flatscreen monitor for as little as 249 € (~318$) – of course with free shipping.

So I guess I could call this week “renew and recycle”-week, because as you might have already guessed: my “old” lcd-monitor (15,1″ Fujitsu Siemens) will make it’s new home infront of my third pc (install currently in progress).

New HDD arrived

Today my new hdd arrived. A lovely Samsung SP1614N, 160GB – 8MB Cache :-)

Now I can finally do a more than needed reinstall of my main workstation, which will be equipped with this new hdd which will replace the “old” second hdd (IBM 60GB) – which will in return be put into my third pc (currently running without a hdd – Knoppix) enabling me to install a linux distro. I’m still pondering which way to go: it’s going to be either Debian or SUSE. I’ll keep you updated…

Firefox Campaign hits Germany!

After the successful Spread Firefox campaign in the US, Mozilla Europe thought it was time to start the same campaign right here in Germany.

Differences to the NY Times Ad:

  • Alrighty, the ad won’t be in the NY Times, but in a major german newspaper.
  • The donators determine which large newspaper this will (FAZ, Süddeutsche or Die Welt)
  • The ad will be in german ;-)

More infos can be found on the official website: Firefox-kommt.de (the title could be translated as “Firefox is coming!”). Now I’m really thinking about donating to this campaign, too. I’ll keep you updated.

My name will be in the NY Times, too…

As I took my daily tour through the numerous blogs I read regularly I found something really catching my eye. Chu Yeow talked about support the Firefox campaign by donating to their newest idea – an ad campaign which will buy a whole page ad in the New York Times when the big 1.0 drops, with the “side effect” that this ad will include all the names of the donators making this ad possible.

So I thought this is a great idea, and to help Chu Yeow out a little I made my donation via his donation link – if you would like to donate feel free to use this link which can earn him a t-shirt signed by the firefox team :-)

My donation to the ad campaign

If anyone has access to the NY-Times’ print edition it would be lovely to get a scan or a notify so that I can go out an get a copy. Cheers :-)

Godaddy Domain Madness

After receiving a mail from GoDaddy that they’re selling .info domains for 1$ (first year) I registered some yesterday…online to come back today and find out that the price rose to 1.95$ :-(

Nontheless still a good deal and I guess I’ll get some more domains as I’ll finally have some time to start some new projects from November 1st onwards…
