Star Wars Episode III

Just came back from Cinemaxx Stuttgart. Today I finally had the chance to see Star Wars Episode III – Die Rache der Sith (or Revenge of the Sith for all the english speaking fellows).

I have to say it’s by far the best episode of the “new trilogy”! Finally the story is complete: you know how Lea & Luke were born, how Anakin turned into Darth Vader and how he got all the injuries which require him to wear his black suit and all, you see characters like Chewbacca for the first time (on his home planet Kashyyyk), etc etc

I would recommend this movie to everyone and I’m looking forward to see it again sometime soonish (probably on DVD)…

My rating: 5/5

  1. Wow, glowing review.

I have to differ with you here. I easily thought it was the worst of the SW movies ever.
Acting was bad (especially Annikan’s and the Princess)
The whole Darth Vader being born and ripping himself from the shackles ala Frankenstein was so contrived.
The Wookies swinging on vines out over an inland sea/ocean ala Ewoks in Endor was just plain silly. (made the wookies look like overgrown ewoks. Hmmm, even the names are similiar)

Even the special effects to me seemed subpar.

All in all I thought of it as a waste of money.

Batman (even with Katie Holmes uninspired acting) was better, or heck, even Mr. & Mrs Smith/Pitt was better.

  2. Well, there are certainly some points that could have been better, but all in all I really found it to be a good movie – no doubt there will never be a better story than Episode IV-VI (and I guess after Episode I and II noone expected too much of Episode III?!), but the special effects and the happenings of the story made Episode III worthwhile IMO.

I mean the problem is: some things (if not most things) were pre-determined to begin with (- from Episodes IV-VI), so the creative space is limited in some parts: I thought the scene were Obi-wan fights Anakin and chops away his feet etc was a little weird – but then again: he could have killed him right there (d’oh: he couldn’t as in Anakin -> Darth Vader)…and there are many other examples…(where it doesn’t make sense in the moment, but only in the whole story line)…

About the wookiees: I was really surprised to see Chewbacca (the scene where Yoda leaves with his little ship) and indeed they seemed a little primitive and, at least in my mind, Kashyyyk could have looked a little different.

Your comparison Wookiee Ewok really makes sense when I think about it:

Wookiee: big, hairy, you don’t understand ’em
Ewok: little, fat, hairy, you don’t understand ’em

Maybe they’re related in some way (but I’m not geeky enough to find that out  )

So all in all I would still give it a 5/5, not because the movie on it’s own is one of the best I’ve ever seen (a movie like Shawshank Redemption comes to mind), but because it captured me for the time being and finally made the story complete (so movie + story from Episode I through VI + SFX + ??? do it for me)…

Hmm Batman Begins…I should go see that sometime soonish – all the trailers looked awesome, I guess this will finally be a real Batman movie again…
